Why Fortuna Düsseldorf goalie Maduka Okoye failed to make Nigeria U-23 squad for AFCON qualifiers against Libya
Fortuna Düsseldorf goalie Maduka Okoye revealed how pleased he was when he was handed his invitation into Nigeria’s U-23 team by Imama Amapakabo.
The 19-year-old goalie vouched to take his chances till he gets to the national team, but sadly he wasn’t given the chance to live his dreams just yet.
As Nigeria file out against Libya U-23 today, Maduka Okoye’s name was missing despite receiving the call up to be part of the team.
He wasn’t part of the team that departed Nigeria for Tunisia, neither was he part of the late arrivals who failed to make the squad. He didn’t show face at all.
The reason why the German-born who said no amount of money could make him play for his country of birth instead of Nigeria isn’t far fetched.
According to Nigerian journo based in Germany, Oma Akatugba, Maduka Okoye didn’t make the squad to Tunisia because his club refused to release him.
This is startling considering the fact that FIFA mandated all clubs to release their players during international breaks.
