Why has Tennis star Iga Swiatek received a one-month suspension?

French Open champion Iga Swiatek has received a one-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, trimetazidine (TMZ), the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Thursday.

The 23-year-old from Poland tested positive in an out-of-competition sample in August 2024. The ITIA determined the result was unintentional, caused by contamination of a regulated non-prescription medication, melatonin, which Swiatek used for jet lag and sleep problems.

The ITIA stated that her fault was minimal and fell under “No Significant Fault or Negligence.” Swiatek accepted the suspension, which ran provisionally from September 22 to October 4, causing her to miss three tournaments. With that period counting towards the ban, only eight days remain.

Swiatek will also lose her prize money from the Cincinnati Open, where she tested positive and lost to world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
