Why I choose South Africa over Nigeria – U-17 star Micheal Dokunmu reveals
Africa U-17 Cup of Nations bound star Micheal Dokunmu has revealed why he choose to represent his country of birth South Africa over his fatherland Nigeria.
Born in South Africa on June 20, 2005 to Nigerian parents, Dokunmu is an attacking midfielder and currently plays for Vitesse U-18 team in Netherlands.
Eligible to represent Nigeria and South Africa, the youngster picked his place of birth and so has been selected in the Amajimbos squad for the 2023 U-17 AFCON which gets underway in Algeria on April 29.
On reason for his choice Dokunmu said per the South African. “I chose South Africa because it’s my birthplace, I decided because I am more comfortable playing for my birthplace and because I really love South Africa,”
“It was one of my dreams, one of my goals to get called up to the national team and from here, the U-17 team and then gradually going on to make my debut for the national first team,” he added.
Dokunmu could get the opportunity to line-up against his brothers on May 6 when South Africa face the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria in a Group B clash.
Two-time Africa U-17 Cup of Nations winners Nigeria are drawn vs South Africa, Zambia and Morocco in group B.
Despite his involvement with South Africa at U-17 level, Dokunmu could still elect to switch allegiance to Nigeria at Full International level.
