Why is former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan trending on social media?

Asamoah Gyan is not a new name in the world of sports and the controvercies therein, this time, there is news about him outside the sporting world.

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has found himself in the spotlight after a video surfaced showing him in a heated altercation with a Ghanaian politician.

In the video, the 38-year-old football icon is seen visibly agitated and nearly throwing a punch before being restrained by another individual.

The altercation, which quickly went viral, allegedly revolves around a $3 million payment reportedly owed to Gyan by the Bawumia campaign, raising further speculation about the incident.

Reports suggest the confrontation was targeted at Sammy Awuku’s in-law, following accusations of financial mismanagement within the political campaign team.

This controversy comes just two days after Gyan announced his decision to step back from political involvement to focus on humanitarian work.

Gyan had earlier resigned from his role in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating that his participation in politics was not in the best interest of Ghana’s youth.

He revealed his intentions to devote his time to empowering the youth through his foundation, marking an end to his brief political engagement, which saw him appointed chairman of the Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee for the Bawumia presidential campaign.

Despite the controversy, Gyan remains a celebrated figure in Ghana and African football, holding records as the country’s all-time leading goal scorer with 51 goals and the top African scorer in World Cup history.

During his illustrious career, Gyan played in major European and Asian leagues and represented Ghana in three World Cups, seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, and the 2004 Summer Olympics.
