Why Liverpool will not fight Chelsea over Timo Werner
Liverpool will not be going into bidding war with Chelsea over the transfer of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a move to bring the German striker to England, according to reports they are a few details away from signing him.
It was Liverpool who were initially closing on bringing the striker to England after he confessed to be interested in linking up with Jurgen Klopp, but their failure to match his release clause which expires on June 15 has dealt them a big blow.
While they still have a chance of getting the 24-year-old should they match Chelsea’s bid €60m, but Liverpool are reportedly uninterested in the bidding war this summer because they have other priorities.
According to reports, Liverpool would rather focus on new contracts for their start players instead of activating his release clause.
The soon to be Premier League champions have never had any official meeting with the player or his club over a deal, so it is all but sealed for Chelsea.
Timo Werner is expected to sign a five-year-contract and also earn £200k a week.
