Why Ruben Amorim said he would prefer 63-year-old coach to Marcus Rashford at Manchester United

Rúben Amorim, Manchester United’s head coach, has publicly criticised Marcus Rashford’s commitment to training, claiming that he would prefer to have the club’s 63-year-old goalkeeper coach on the bench instead of the forward.

Rashford was once again absent from the matchday squad as Manchester United secured a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham, with Lisandro Martinez scoring the only goal of the game through a deflected strike. Despite the victory, Amorim made it clear that Rashford’s exclusion was due to his perceived lack of effort, specifically in training.

“It’s always the same reason: the training, the way I see a footballer should do in life. It’s every day, every detail,” Amorim said during his post-match press conference. He went on to explain that if Rashford’s attitude doesn’t improve, he will remain out of the squad. “If things don’t change, I will not change.”

Rashford has not featured in a Premier League matchday squad for nearly two months, and Amorim stated that he is not seeing the commitment from the England international that he expects from his players.

He also expressed frustration about the lack of pace on the bench, adding, “I would put [Man Utd goalkeeper coach Jorge] Vital before a player who doesn’t give the maximum every day.”

Amorim’s comments signal a clear message to Rashford and the rest of the squad: only players who show consistent effort and commitment in training will be given a chance to feature.
