Why Victor Osimhen Will Miss the CAF Awards Ceremony

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen will not attend the 2025 CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat, Morocco, after he was asked to return to Istanbul for urgent medical examinations.

The Nigerian forward, who is one of the top finalists for the African Player of the Year award, picked up a hamstring injury during Nigeria’s African playoff final against DR Congo on Sunday. The 26-year-old has since been experiencing discomfort, prompting Galatasaray’s medical team to schedule an immediate MRI scan to assess the severity of the problem.

Osimhen was expected to feature prominently at tonight’s ceremony, set for Wednesday, 19 November 2025, but he has now travelled back to Turkey. The scan is expected to take place in the coming hours, with the results likely to determine how long he will be sidelined as the 2025–26 season progresses.

The striker previously won the CAF Player of the Year award in 2023 and remains a leading contender again this year. His absence, however, is certain to create a different mood around the event.

Who Are the Finalists?

The three finalists for the 2025 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award are Victor Osimhen, Mohamed Salah, and Achraf Hakimi.

Osimhen enters the race with impressive numbers, scoring 37 goals in 41 matches during his loan spell at Galatasaray. Salah also enjoyed an outstanding campaign at Liverpool, recording 29 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League. Hakimi, meanwhile, played a crucial role in Paris Saint-Germain’s historic treble, including their maiden UEFA Champions League triumph.

Who Is Likely to Win?

The contest is seen as one of the tightest in recent years. Osimhen’s goal-scoring form puts him among the favourites, although his injury and absence at the awards might affect perceptions. Salah presents a strong challenge with his remarkable individual output. Hakimi, celebrated for his defensive quality and trophy-laden season, could emerge as a surprise winner.

With all three finalists producing exceptional performances, the final decision could go in any direction as Africa waits to discover this year’s top star.
