Wiegman takes a chance on 17-Year-Old Parkinson in England Squad
Sarina Wiegman has included 17-year-old midfielder Erica Parkinson in her latest England squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Iceland.
Parkinson, who plays her club football in Portugal, is one of the more notable inclusions in a 23-player squad that otherwise features a largely familiar group.
Wiegman acknowledged that stepping into the senior team at such a young age comes with its challenges.
“I think for every player that comes in for the first time that is young, it is a big step for all of them. It brings some anxiety,” she said.
She made it clear that the focus is on helping the teenager settle rather than expecting an immediate impact.
“It’s normal you are a bit anxious but just go out there and enjoy yourself as much as possible and try to adapt to the level as quickly as possible too.”
While Parkinson is not expected to play a major role straight away, Wiegman is keen to assess her at close range.
“It will be really good to see her. She would surprise me if we would consider her straight away to come on the pitch. But I like surprises!”
The England manager also highlighted the step up from youth and club football into the senior international level.
“I’m aware that the step from the Portuguese league and the under-23s to the England seniors is a big step, but at the same time I want to see her and give her that opportunity.”
England will face Spain and Iceland in April as they continue their qualification campaign.
