Wilfred Ndidi happy for Super Eagles AFCON group stage success
Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi expressed his happiness for the Super Eagles’ qualification to the Round of 16 at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
Ndidi, who missed the tournament due to injury, shared his joy for the team’s success and emphasized their plan to reach the final.
Despite his absence, Ndidi highlighted the team’s long-term planning and determination to perform well at AFCON. He mentioned that the goal was to win games and progress to the next stage, ultimately aiming for the final.
Ndidi said on SKY SPORTS: “It was really bad for me not to be there but I’m so happy for the team because even from last year, this is what we have been planning to go for the AFCON. Just try as much as possible to get to the final. We planned to win games which gets you to the next stage.”
Nigeria secured their place in the Round of 16 by defeating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 and finishing second in Group A with seven points.
Regarding his injury, Ndidi mentioned that he had initially expected to be out until April. Still, after a quick recovery from surgery, he is optimistic about returning to action at the beginning of February.
“The injury’s alright, I’m getting there. It’s two weeks post surgery. Hopefully in a couple of weeks, I’ll be back.” Asked if that was a couple of weeks until he was training or playing, he added: “A couple of weeks to play.
