Wilfred Ndidi takes over as Super Eagles Captain

Wilfred Ndidi has been appointed the new captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The announcement was made by the national team’s official channels on Friday, following the international retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong.

The Besiktas midfielder takes over the leadership role at a moment when Nigeria prepares for one of African football’s biggest tournaments. Ndidi, who has worn the armband for Nigeria on several occasions in recent matches, officially inherits the role after several senior figures stepped away from international duty.

Speaking after his appointment, Ndidi acknowledged the weight of the responsibility and stressed the importance of unity and collective effort within the squad. He said being named captain is a “huge responsibility” and highlighted that cooperation among players and coaching staff will be key to success.

“I have had conversation with a couple of the players. Just to let them know the reason why we are. I also need their support as well. The staff as well, we are all in this together.”

Ndidi’s experience, both domestically and internationally, positions him as a well-respected figure to guide the team through the challenges ahead at AFCON 2025.
