Following the ugly brawl that saw Trabzonspor fans attack Fenerbahce players after a Turkish Super Lig clash, questions have been raised to the possibility of punishment for Nigerian defender Bright Osayi-Samuel who fought against the attackers.
Bright Osayi-Samuel was caught in the center of the brawl as he defended himself against the violent attackers, engaging in physical confrontation.
Players, clubs, and staff members who participated in the altercation may also face significant penalties in accordance with Turkey’s soccer federation regulations.”
Possible punishments include bans ranging from 5 to 10 matches, although Bright Osayi-Samuel and those involved may argue self-defense.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED ALREADY
The aftermath of the violent clashes during the match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe has prompted strong reactions from soccer authorities in Turkey and globally.
The Turkish soccer federation swiftly condemned the incidents, emphasising that such violence has no place in football, which is meant to promote friendship and peace. They promised to thoroughly investigate the events and ensure that those responsible face appropriate legal consequences.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya also denounced the violence, vowing to identify and punish those who invaded the field. He stressed that violence has no place in sports, which should uphold principles of chivalry.
FIFA, the global governing body of soccer, joined in condemning the violence, saying that players’ safety is paramount.
FIFA advised the Turkish football authority to impose fines, stadium closures, and behind-closed-doors games on clubs found guilty of failing to control their supporters.
The incident adds to a series of controversies in Turkish soccer, including a recent attack on a referee by the president of a first division club. Turkish soccer authorities are expected to take firm action to address the recurring issue of violence in the country’s top division, with significant penalties anticipated for players and supporters involved.
