William Troost-Ekong foundation set for launch with charity match in Uyo
2023 AFCON MVP, William Troost-Ekong will launch his foundation with a charity match scheduled to take place in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The 30-year-old defender, known for his exceptional performances on the field, is making headlines off the pitch with his announcement of a charity match set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday, June 2, 2024.
The charity match, which will mark the launch of the Troost Ekong Foundation, aims to raise funds for various charitable causes.
Ekong, who was named the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) best player, expressed his excitement for the event on social media, stating, “FUNDRAISING CHARITY MATCH SUNDAY 02.06.2024. E GO LOUD 🇳🇬 📣”
Despite facing a setback due to a ruptured biceps femoris in his right leg, Ekong is poised for a return to action before the charity match following a successful operation in February.
The injury, sustained during the Super Eagles’ second group match at the AFCON 2023 against Côte d’Ivoire, required minor surgery, forcing Ekong to miss the remainder of the season.
Despite the injury setback, Troost-Ekong’s dedication and perseverance were evident as he led the Super Eagles to the final game of the AFCON 2023, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Ivory Coast.
The launch of the William Troost-Ekong foundation will be witnessed by Super Eagles stars and Nigerian football stakeholders as it will take place just before the Super Eagles of Nigeria face the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a 2026 World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Ekong is a native of Akwa Ibom State and so is expected to draw massive crowd and support from the government and people of the oil-rich state.
