William Troost-Ekong Opens Up on Club vs. Country Dilemma Ahead of AFCON

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has spoken about the challenges African players face when balancing club commitments with national team duties, particularly during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking on a podcast with former teammate Ben Foster, Troost-Ekong revealed that clubs often resist releasing players for international tournaments like AFCON.

Clubs Reluctant to Release Players

Reflecting on his time at Watford, Troost-Ekong shared how difficult it was to prioritise international duty. “Yeah, I do,” he said, admitting that clubs can be hesitant to let players go.

He recalled an incident involving his former teammate Emmanuel Dennis, who chose not to join the national team for AFCON while Troost-Ekong went ahead. “I think everybody remembers how it was with Dennis at the time because he didn’t go, and I did,” he noted.

Clear Communication with Clubs

Troost-Ekong emphasised the importance of being upfront with clubs about international commitments.

“When I signed for PAOK, I made it clear that it was an AFCON year, and I would most likely go. I told them, ‘Keep that in mind, and I hope you’re okay with it.’ Thankfully, they agreed,” he explained.

However, he acknowledged that when the time for AFCON approaches, club managers often apply pressure to delay departures or return quickly.

Balancing Club Pressure

“The manager might say, ‘Try and play one more game before you leave, or come back as soon as possible.’ But if you return with an injury, like a torn hamstring, it doesn’t go down well,” Troost-Ekong admitted.
