William Troost-Ekong reflects on tough Super Eagles journey
Super Eagles star William Troost-Ekong has shared some valuable lessons from his journey to becoming one of Nigeria’s key players, including the challenges that shaped his rise to captain. The 31-year-old centre-back, who plays for Al Kholood, has earned admiration for his leadership both on and off the pitch.
Troost-Ekong recently posted throwback pictures on his Snapchat, reflecting on his early days with the Super Eagles. Among the photos was one from his 22nd birthday, when senior players threw him into the swimming pool as part of the tradition for younger players.
In a candid post, Troost-Ekong wrote, “They threw me in the swimming pool. I said anything???…No. Times were different. As a young boy, you accepted and earned your stripes. Work hard. Your chance. #EarnedNotGiven.” This moment was a key part of his journey, teaching him humility and perseverance.
Although Troost-Ekong represented the Netherlands at youth level, he chose to play for Nigeria and made his senior debut in 2015. Since then, he has become a respected figure, leading Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and winning the Player of the Tournament award in the 2023 edition. He also holds the record for the most goals scored by a defender in AFCON history, with five goals.
Looking ahead, Troost-Ekong is focused on leading Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He has been included in coach Eric Chelle’s 39-man provisional squad and will play a key role in the upcoming matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. With the Super Eagles currently in fifth place in their World Cup qualifying group, these fixtures are crucial for their hopes of securing a spot at the tournament.
