Enyimba FC striker Edidiong Ezekiel has paid a heartfelt tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, who announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, 4 December 2025.
Edidiong, who has represented Nigeria at U23 level and with the Home-based Super Eagles, comes from Akwa Ibom State — the same state as Troost-Ekong. In an emotional message posted on his social media account, the young forward praised the veteran defender for his leadership and impact on Nigerian football.
In his message, Edidiong wrote:
“Dear Captain William Troost-Ekong,
Hearing the news of your retirement from international football fills me with mixed emotions. As a Nigerian and from the same State as you, this moment means a lot to me.
I will never forget the day we spoke. The calm way you listened, the wisdom you shared, and the encouragement you gave me. Your words have stayed with me, and I will hold them close to my heart as I continue my career. You didn’t just lead the Super Eagles on the pitch; you inspired so many of us off the pitch with your character, discipline and love for Nigeria.
You are a legend, brother. You made us proud every single time you wore the green and white. Thank you for everything you have done for our country, for the jersey, and for young players like me who look up to you.
Wishing you success in your next chapter. Your legacy lives on in all of us.
Forever a Super Eagle.”
He ended his message with hashtags honouring the former captain: #E14 #Ekong #SuperEagles #KingJesusIsAlive.
Troost-Ekong, confirmed his retirement after earning 83 caps for Nigeria. During his time with the Super Eagles, he won three medals and took part in five major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. He described representing Nigeria as “the greatest privilege” of his life.
Edidiong’s tribute reflects the deep respect many Nigerian players and fans have for Troost-Ekong, who is widely seen as one of the country’s most dedicated leaders in recent years.
