NPFL: Umar, Yelful, Elum in Race for Match Day 17 VAT Wonder Goal

Goals from Wikki Tourists Abubakar Umar, El-Kanemi Warriors Anthony Yelful and Sochima Elum of Rivers United have made the shortlist for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 17 VAT Wonder Goal.

Umar opened scoring for Wikki away from home in their fixture against Sunshine Stars, eventually losing 2-1 but his goal was adjudged to have made the mark to go up for voting. Wikki had launched a counter offensive that drew a good number of Sunshine Stars defenders to the left side of their midfield but Umar stole into the middle where he received a bass at the edge of the box, steeled his nerves to calmly slot the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

In Maiduguri, Heartland sunk the lowest point on the table after a 3-0 routing by El-Kanemi Warriors and Anthony Yelful got two of the three goals. In the first of his goals, the attacker was at the end of a counter attack resulting from a Heartland corner kick. Yelful benefitted from a headed pass to stylishly slide the ball through the arms of the Heartland goalkeeper.

Sochima Elum scored one of the fastest goals of the season, netting within 10 seconds in the only goal in the Rivers United and Nasarawa United fixture. Surrounded by two markers, Elum had confidently flicked of the ball up in between two and then hit a volley that sailed to the roof of the goal post, leaving the goalkeeper befuddled.

Videos of the three goals have been uploaded on the NPFL website, www.npfl.ng and twitter handle, @lmcnpfl for voting which opens on Monday, April 21 and ends at midnight of Wednesday, April 25.

Emeka Ogbugh of Rivers United and Sikiru Alimi of Sunshine Stars are the two previous winners of the N150,000 prize money so far this season.

The VAT Wonder Goal Award is an initiative of the League Management Company (LMC) supported by the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) to deepen club and community engagement through charity support and also promote the benefits of tax payment through the FIRS tax education campaign.
