Mayweather not interested in Olympics comeback

Former welterweight champion and 1996 Atlanta bronze medallist Floyd Mayweather insisted he will not be tempted out of retirement to compete at the Olympic Games.

Full-time boxers are set to be given the green light to compete at Olympic Games, after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) put forward the radical proposal.

It would make fighters such as Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury eligible to feature at the Olympics.

But the 39-year-old Mayweather, who retired from boxing after improving his undefeated record to 49-0 last September with a points victory over Andre Berto, has no plans to make a comeback.

“Absolutely not,” said Mayweather when asked if he was interested in a return to boxing.

“For my body to recover from all my fights will be for the rest of my life. I’m truly blessed to have been fighting for so much of my life.

“I had a great run. Ain’t no more for this body to heal but rest.”

Mayweather, who won bronze at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, added: “I was able to retire from the sport with all my faculties. I did not let the sport retire me.”
