Fletcher: West Indies capable of winning World Twenty20
Andre Fletcher insisted West Indies are capable of adding to their 2012 World Twenty20 title after Sunday’s comprehensive victory against defending champions Sri Lanka.
Fletcher stepped up in the absence of injured star Chris Gayle, posting a career-best unbeaten 84 off 64 deliveries as the Windies crushed Sri Lanka by seven-wickets in their Super 10 clash.
Gayle was unable to open the batting due to the amount of time spent off the field after suffering a hamstring injury as Sri Lanka recorded 122-9.
And Fletcher staked his claim atop the order with six boundaries and five sixes to lead the Windies to two wins from as many matches in Group 1.
“We know what we are capable of. We know the strength of our team. We always back ourselves to win the World Cup,” Fletcher told reporters after being asked about his team’s chances of winning the tournament in India.
“We have two wins under our belt. Once we get to the semi-finals, we will take it from there into the finals. If we continue playing the cricket we are accustomed to playing, we can win the cup for a second time.”
“We have a great team spirit. We are united as one,” Fletcher added, with the Windies two points clear of South Africa.
“We have to continue that momentum. Try not to get too complacent. We always try to play each game as a final. We will always go out and play as hard as possible.”
West Indies face South Africa in a top-of-the-table battle in Nagpur on Friday but Fletcher does not believe he has cemented his spot at the top of the order, despite his impressive knock against the Sri Lankans.
“It depends on the team we select and the opposition we play. I cannot say that I would be opening or even playing the next game, so I have to just keep my fingers crossed,” the 28-year-old said.
