Khan: I can surprise everyone and beat Alvarez

WBC middleweight challenger Amir Khan is keeping the faith as he prepares to lock horns with champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, confident of causing an upset in Las Vegas.

Brit Khan will step into the ring with Alvarez in a blockbuster bout on May 7, having never fought above welterweight previously.

The former world light-welterweight champion has not been given much of a chance against the Mexican star by pundits heading into next month’s fight.

But despite his foray into uncharted territory, Khan is confident of defying the odds, just like he did when he claimed a silver medal as a teenager at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

“I’ve come to realise how fortunate I am to have made enough money to secure our lives,” Khan told the Daily Mail.

“Now I come to the fight which can realise my lifelong dream of becoming the best at what I do best.

“Canelo is the superstar of the ring at the moment. Beating him is about setting my name in stone.”

Khan, 29, added: “Most people think I’m mad to be fighting this bigger, stronger champion. Pretty much everyone makes me the underdog, For us it’s like going back to the Olympics.

“It’s Athens all over again. It’s me, my dad and my trainer against the world. We’re going to surprise everyone again.”
