Cavs LeBron named NBA Finals MVP for a third time
LeBron James came home to Ohio to deliver a championship to Cleveland, and on Sunday he completed his promise.
He also earned his third NBA Finals MVP trophy in the process after leading the Cavaliers to a 93-89 win over the Golden State Warriors in game seven.
The victory was even more impressive as the Cavs created history by becoming the first team to erase a 3-1 deficit to win a championship series.
James’ dominant NBA Finals performance culminated in game seven with a triple-double of 27 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
“Everyone counted us out,” James told ESPN as he accepted the Finals MVP award. “But that’s when we strived the most and that’s definitely when I strived the most, when everyone counted me out.”
James joins Michael Jordan, Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the fourth player in NBA history to have three titles and four regular-season MVP awards.
The meaningful win for James and the Cavs also ends a 52-year championship drought for the city of Cleveland.
“I’m home, this is what I came back for,” James said. “I’m at a loss for words. This is unbelievable. It doesn’t feel real right now.
