Former Leicester City defender John Painstil announces retirement from football

Former Leicester City and Ghanaian defender John Painstil has formally announced his retirement from professional football.

The 35-year-old last played for Maritzburg United in the South African Premier Soccer League.

He has been dogged by legal troubles in recent times including an alleged assault of a police commander. The case is still pending in court.

Painstil started his career in Ghana with Berekum Arsenal in 1999/2000 season.

He went on to make more than 300 appearances for clubs including Liberty Professionals, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Tel Aviv, West Ham United, Fulham, Leicester City FC, Santos and Maritzburg.

He won 88 caps for his country playing at two FIFA World Cups in in 2006 and 2010.

“John Painstil, the Jeonju Man JP$, will like to announce my retirement from been (sic) a soccer player,” he said.

“I thank God for bringing me this far. Was a long journey from 1999 to 2016. Two world cups and 5 AFCON and 89 CAPS FOR GHANA.”
