Red-hot Johnson eyes top spot

Dustin Johnson has lofty ambitions to become world number one after backing up his first major victory by clinching the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

The American triumphed at last month’s U.S. Open despite incurring a controversial one-stroke penalty in his final round at Oakmont Country Club.

And Johnson was top of the leaderboard again as a final-round 66 saw him beat Scott Piercy by one stroke at the Firestone Country Club, as reigning world number one Jason Day saw his challenge falter.

Day eventually finished in a three-way tie for third alongside Matt Kuchar and Jordan Spieth, who Johnson has usurped as world number two by a mere 0.002 ranking points.

But Johnson is aiming higher still, telling Sky Sports: “Of course I want to be the best player in the world. If I just keep winning, then that’ll do it for me.

“I feel like every part of my game is good. I’ve been driving it really well, I feel like I’m wedging it good and I feel like I’m finally starting to roll some putts in.

“I feel like I’ve been playing well all year long and I’ve got a lot of confidence going in to The Open,” he added, referring to the third major of the year, which starts at Royal Troon on July 14
