Lewis Hamilton wins German GP, increases drivers’ championship points to 19

Lewis Hamilton has won the German Grand Prix to extend his lead over Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg at the top of the drivers’ championship to 19 points.

The result means that Hamilton has now won six of the last seven F1 races, taking his career total to 49 wins and 96 podium finishes.

Rosberg started the race on pole but was forced to settle for fourth place as for the second week in a row, Hamilton was quickest off the line and ensured that he was never beaten. The German’s afternoon was dealt a further blow when he was handed a five-second penalty after being judged to have forced Max Verstappen off the track on lap 29.

Consequently Daniel Ricciardo and Verstappen both took places on the podium for the first time this year, finishing second and third place respectively to give Red Bull a 14-point advantage over Ferrari in the constructors’ championships at the midway point.

Formula 1 now takes a four-week break before resuming in Belgium at the end of August.
