2022 FIFA World Cup Draw: Senegal drawn with hosts Qatar as champions France get easy draw
Ghana, Tunisia, Cameroon, Morocco face tricky paths to knockout stages
The 2022 FIFA World Cup Draw was conducted in Doha, the capital city of Qatar after 29 of the 32 participating countries were determined.
In Group A, African champions and highest-ranked side Senegal were drawn against hosts Qatar, and the returning duo of Netherlands and Ecuador. Three of the four teams in the group were not at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with only the Teranga Lions making consecutive appearances.
In Group B, Euro 2020 finalists England were drawn against the United States of America, Islamic Republic of Iran and the final European Qualifier (Wales, Scotland/Ukraine).
In Group C, Lionel Messi will lead Argentina out against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland, Saudi Arabia and Mexico.
In Group D, champions France are up against the only team they failed to beat in the 2018 World Cup, Denmark, Tunisia and the winner of the first intercontinental playoffs (Peru or Australia/United Arab Emirates).
In Group E of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Draw, 2010 champions Spain have been pitted against 2014 champions Germany, Japan and the winner of the second intercontinental playoffs (New Zealand or Costa Rica).
In Group F, second and third-place teams from the 2018 edition Belgium and Croatia will lock horns, and they are joined by Canada and Morocco.
In Group G, Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia have been drawn together in a replica of their group at the 2018 World Cup, with Cameroon joining them in the group.
In Group H, conquerors of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Ghana have been drawn with Luis Suarez and Uruguay, the team that famously denied them a place in the 2010 World Cup semifinals. They will be joined by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and Korea Republic.
Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha was part of the selected individuals that carried out the 2022 FIFA World Cup Draw, and artiste Davido performed at the occasion.
