2023 AFCON: Kenneth Omeruo expresses surprise at Equatorial Guinea’s performance

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has expressed his surprise at the impressive performance of Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Equatorial Guinea secured top spot in Group A, finishing ahead of Nigeria, after defeating Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau and securing a draw against the Super Eagles.

The National Thunder emerged as the top-scoring team at AFCON, netting ten goals in three games, including a remarkable 4-0 victory over Ivory Coast in their final group match.

Despite Nigeria having the opportunity to defeat Equatorial Guinea, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, with the Super Eagles coming from a goal down in their first group game on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Kenneth Omeruo, expressed his surprise at Equatorial Guinea’s performance and how they convincingly defeated tournament hosts to finish top of group A.

In an interview after the win over Guinea-Bissau, Omeruo said, “Yeah, I am (surprised about how Equatorial Guinea has played).

” I won’t lie. I have a couple of friends there, and also in Spain, there are a lot of Equatorial Guineans there, and they are happy they are first (in Group A) ahead of Nigeria. But they have been fighting, and congrats to them.”

In the absence of Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong, Omeruo captained Nigeria in the match against Guinea-Bissau, which the Super Eagles won thanks to Opa Sangante’s own goal.

Nigeria finished as the runners-up in Group A and will wait for the completion of group-stage games to know their opponent in the last 16, with potential matchups against Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon.
