2023 AFCON: Mo Salah strikes late to force Egypt draw vs Mozambique

Mo Salah struck a late-penalty to help Egypt force a 2-2 draw vs Mozambique in their opening group game of the 2023 AFCON.

After taking a 2nd minute lead, Egypt allowed Mozambique to claw back in the second half to lead 1-2 and heading towards a shcok win before the Pharoahs were awarded a penalty kick in stoppage time.

Egypt skipper Mohamed Salah took responsibility for the spot-kick and scored to level the contest to earn his team a point.

The match was played at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Stadium on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

Salah provided assist for Mostafa Mohammed to fire Egypt ahead after two minutes of play. The Pharoahs had the best chances in the first half but could not add to the tally, and so offered Mozambique hope of a turnaround in the second period.

In the second half, Clesio Bauque and Witi scored in the 55th and 58th minute for Mozambique to turn the game around as Mo Salah and the Pharoahs were left stunned as their less illustrious opponents cruised with a 1-2 lead as the clock ticked towards the ninety minute mark.

Runners-up at the last edition of the AFCON, Egypt pressed hard for an equalizer and found one when Mo Salah converted a penalty kick in stoppage time to force a 2-2 draw.

Egypt will on Thursday, January 18, 2023 face Ghana’s Black Stars while Mozambique will look to build on the point earned vs Cape Verde.
