2023 Australian Open Day Nine: Tsitsipas, Khachanov set up semifinal meeting

Azarenka downs Pegula, Rybakina defeats Ostapenko

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas booked his place in the semifinals of the 2023 Australian Open when he secured a straight sets win over Jiri Lehecka in their quarterfinal clash at the Rod Laver Arena. The Greek star remains the highest ranking player at the tournament after his 6-3 7-6 6-4 over Lehecka. He has now reached the Australian Open semifinals for three consecutive editions of the tournament.

The impressive Sebastian Korda saw his 2023 Australian Open campaign come to a painful end as he was forced to retire in his quarterfinal clash with Karen Khachanov. The young American was two sets down and losing the third set when he could not continue, becoming the first player to retire at this year’s tournament. Khachanov won the match 7-6 6-3 3-0 to set up a clash with Tsitsipas.

Women’s third seed Jessica Pegula saw her hopes of a first Grand Slam dashed when she lost to Victoria Azarenka in their quarterfinal clash. 24th seed Azarenka won the match 6-4 6-1 to reach the semifinal in Melbourne.

Elena Rybakina continued her progress in the Australian Open with a straight sets win over Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko at the Rod Laver Arena. The Kazakhstani star won the match 6-2 6-4 to reach the semifinals, where she will face Azarenka.
