2023 Australian Open Day Seven: Swiatek, Gauff, Auger-Aliassime crash out

Tsitsipas, Pegula, Rybakina all through to fifth round

World number one Iga Swiatek crashed out of the 2023 Australian Open at the fourth round after falling to a shock defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina at the Rod Laver Arena. 22nd seed Rybakina won the match in straight sets 6-4 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Jelena Ostapenko.

17th seed Jelena Ostapenko eased past tournament favourite and seventh seed Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach the quarterfinal of the 2023 Australian Open. The Latvian star won the match 7-5 6-3 to defeat her teenage opponent and book her place in the fifth round.

Jessica Pegula remains the highest ranked player at the 2023 Australian Open after she secured a straight sets win over Barbora Krejcikova to reach the quarterfinals. The third seed defeated her Czech opponent 7-5 6-2 to book her place in the last eight.

Victoria Azarenka recovered from a set down to defeat China’s Zhu Lin and reach the quarterfinals in Melbourne. The Belarusian won the match 4-6 6-1 6-4 to progress.

Stefanos Tsitsipas held off a brilliant fight back from Jannik Sinner to defeat the Italian star in five sets and reach the quarterfinals of the tournament in Melbourne. The third seed won the match 6-4 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3 to progress to the last eight.

Sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was handed a rude shock by Czech star Jiri Lehecka as he gave up a one-set lead to lose in four sets against his unseeded opponent. Lehecka won the match 4-6 6-3 7-6 7-6 to progress to the quarterfinals of the competition.

Sebastian Korda continued his impressive run in Melbourne by defeating tenth seed Hubert Hurkacz to reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 Australian Open. The son of the 1998 Australian Open champion, Korda needed five sets to defeat Hurkacz, winning 3-6 6-3 6-2 1-6 7-6 to progress.

Karen Khachanov was too good for Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, defeating him in straight sets to reach the last eight. Khachanov won the match 6-0 6-0 7-6 to reach the last eight.
