2023 US Open Day Seven: Ostapenko stuns Swiatek as Gauff, Djokovic progress

World number one Iga Swiatek crashed out of the 2023 US Open following a defeat to nemesis Jelena Ostapenko in their Round of 16 meeting. The Pole lost in three sets to Ostapenko and will now lose her #1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka when the new rankings are released. The match ended 6-3 3-6 1-6 as the Latvian extended her record against Swiatek to 4-0.

Sixth seed Coco Gauff ended Caroline Wozniacki’s sensational return to the Grand Slam by claiming a 6-3 3-6 6-1 win over the former world number one in their Round of 16 encounter. The teenager will now play in the quarterfinals as she looks to claim a first major.

Sorana Cirstea stunned 15th seed Belinda Bencic to reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open. The 30th seed Romanian star claimed a 6-3 6-3 straight sets win in the Round of 16 encounter.

Karolina Muchova defeated Wang Xinyu to reach the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows. The 10th seed had to fight against her Chinese opponent before claiming a 6-3 5-7 6-1 win in three sets to progress from their fourth round meeting.

In the men’s draw, world number two Novak Djokovic continued his progress in the tournament with a straight sets win over Croatian star Borna Gojo. Djokovic picked up a 6-2 7-5 6-4 win to reach the eight of the competition.

Ninth seed Taylor Fritz defeated Dominic Stricker in straight sets to qualify for thr quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open. The American star claimed a 7-6 6-4 6-4 win over the unseeded Swiss player to send him crashing out of the tournament.

Tenth seed Frances Tiafoe qualified for the last eight in Flushing Meadows with a dominant straight sets win over Rinky Hijikata. The American star picked up a 6-4 6-1 6-4 win over his Australian opponent to reach the quarterfinals.

14th seed Tommy Paul lost to unseeded compatriot Ben Shelton, crashing out of the 2023 US Open, as a result. Shelton won the match in four sets after a composed performance in front of the Arthur Ashe crowd. He claimed a 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4 win over Paul to reach the quarterfinals.
