2023 Wimbledon Day One: Gauff crashes out as Djokovic, Ruud progress

Seventh seed Coco Gauff crashed out of the 2023 Wimbledon tournament at the first hurdle, losing in three sets to fellow American Sofia Kenin in the first round of the tournament to exit quite early. The teenager fell to a 4-6 6-4 2-6 defeat at the hands of her more experienced opponent at Wimbledon.

Women’s world number one and French Open winner Iga Swiatek made light work of unseeded Chinese player Zhu Lin, defeating her 6-1 6-3 in straight sets to reach the second round at the 2023 Wimbledon.

Venus Williams was in action on Day One, crashing out at the hands of Elina Svitolina in Round One of the tournament. Svitolina overcame the two-time winner in straight sets 6-4 6-3 to progress to the second round.

Fourth seed Jessica Pegula needed three sets to defeat unseeded Lauren Davis and reach the second round. Pegula claimed a 6-2 6-7 6-3 win over her opponent to qualify.

Fifth seed Caroline Garcia recorded a straight sets win over Katie Volynets to reach the second round of the tournament. The French star won the match 6-4 6-3 and progressed in the competition.

In the men’s draw, French Open winner and second seed Novak Djokovic wasted no time to dispatch Pedro Cachin in straight sets, claiming a 6-3 6-3 7-6 win over the Argentine star to reach the second round at the 2023 Wimbledon tournament.

Two-time beaten finalist in Roland Garros Casper Ruud needed four sets to defeat unseeded Frenchman Laurent Lokoli in the first round at the 2023 Wimbledon tournament. The fourth seed picked up a 6-1 5-7 6-4 6-3 win to progress to the second round.

Unseeded American Michael Mmoh stunned 11th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets to reach the second round of the tournament. Mmoh picked up a 7-6 6-7 7-6 6-4 win to progress on Day One.

Eighth seed Jannik Sinner breezed into the second round of the tournament with a 6-2 6-2 6-2 win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina in their first round meeting.

Returning to Wimbledon this year, Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev claimed a straight sets win over Australian star Max Purcell to reach the second round of the tournament. Rublev won the match 6-3 7-5 6-4 to progress beyond the first round.
