2026 FIFA World Cup: USA Top Group D Despite Turkey Defeat as Australia Reach Knockout Stage

The United States finished top of Group D despite suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Turkey, while Australia secured their place in the Round of 32 after a goalless draw with Paraguay.

The Americans had already qualified for the knockout stage after victories over Paraguay and Australia, allowing coach Mauricio Pochettino to make nine changes to his starting line-up against Turkey at SoFi Stadium.

Defender Auston Trusty gave the hosts an early lead in the third minute, but Turkey fought back through Arda Güler and Orkun Kökçü before half-time.

The USA equalised shortly after the break through Sebastian Berhalter, but Turkey snatched victory in the eighth minute of stoppage time when Kaan Ayhan scored from close range following excellent work by substitute Can Uzun.

The match also saw the return of Christian Pulisic, who made his first appearance since suffering a calf injury in the opening match against Paraguay.

Despite the defeat, the United States finished top of the group and will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.

In the other Group D match, Australia and Paraguay played out a cautious 0-0 draw in San Francisco.

The result was enough for Australia to qualify as runners-up, while Paraguay’s four points leave them in a strong position to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Australia created the better chances, with Jackson Irvine and Cristian Volpato going close in the first half. Paraguay improved after the break, but neither side could find a winning goal.

The Socceroos will now face the runners-up from the group containing Egypt, Iran and Belgium, while Paraguay are expected to take on Germany if they qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
