Nigeria wins first medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria men’s table tennis led by veteran Segun Toriola lost to India men’s team 3-0 on Monday in the final of the men’s team table tennis event at the ongoing 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia to claim Nigeria’s first medal.

Bode Abiodun started the push for Nigeria but fell 4-1 to Sharath ACHANTA. The Portuguese based player won the first game 11-4 before losing, 11-5, 11-4, 11-9 in games 2,3 and 4 respectively.

Veteran Segun TORIOLA also fell 4-1 to Sathiyan GNANASEKARAN in the second game. Segun Toriola won the first game 12-10 before losing 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th games respectively.

The duo of Harmeet DESAI and Sathiyan GNANASEKARAN then beat Olajide OMOTAYO and Bode ABIODUN in the group game to secure a 3-0 win over Nigeria in the final on Monday. The Nigerian duo lost 11-8, 11-5, 11-3 in the game.

Although the men’s table tennis team lost in the final, the silver medal won is Nigeria’s only medal at the games so far.

It is the second time that the India men’s team will be winning the gold medal in table tennis having won in 2006.
