Guptill reveals the secret behind his record breaking form

New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill does not believe there has been any secret formula to his record breaking season.

The Kiwi opener knocked the highest ever World Cup score of 237 not out last year, notched the fastest-ever half-century by a New Zealander in a Twenty20 international and formed part of the highest T20 partnership of 171 with Kane Williamson in Sunday’s 10-wicket win over Pakistan.

Guptill (87 not out) said the key to his form was simply finding a way to get through the tough times in the middle.

“I don’t think you can put it down to anything,” he said after his innings at Seddon Park.

“Sometimes your game just clicks, and other times things just aren’t quite there. You’ve just got to work through the hard times.

“I’ve just got to go out and play my game every time and sometimes it’s not going to come off and I have to play second-fiddle to Kane, and we did that and he came off pretty well.”

And while Guptill has been out in the middle notching up the runs, New Zealand’s middle-order batsmen have been consigned to roles as spectators – not that Guptill feels the need to apologise.

“You don’t really want to get out to give other people a go do you? It can only be good for us that we’re winning not many wickets down,” he said.

It’s disappointing for the middle order, but it can only be good for New Zealand cricket.”
