‘ Great team ‘ – Genot Rohr hails Super Eagles ahead of Benin Republic clash

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is set to face his former team in a high-stakes match in Abidjan for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Rohr, who was dismissed by then-Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick just a month before the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, will now lead the Republic of Benin against Nigeria.

Rohr’s departure after a five-year tenure with the Super Eagles was controversial, and his upcoming clash with his former team has garnered significant attention. The Republic of Benin, coached by Rohr, recently secured their first Group C victory by defeating Rwanda, and they are looking forward to the challenge against Nigeria.

Speaking to the media in Abidjan ahead of the match, Rohr downplayed any notion of seeking revenge against Nigeria. “We’ve been here practically two weeks. We were not complete but we were able to prepare for the two matches,” Rohr said. “We have the chance to play here (Abidjan) tomorrow against Nigeria, a high-level match. We know it’s a great team. We are outsiders. There is no revenge to be taken.”

Despite his diplomatic remarks, the narrative of Rohr seeking redemption against his former employers has dominated discussions ahead of the match.

The outcome of this match is crucial for both teams. Nigeria’s Super Eagles are determined to solidify their position in the qualifiers, while Benin, under Rohr’s guidance, aims to continue their momentum. The result could significantly influence the standings and the path to the 2026 World Cup.

The Super Eagles, aware of the stakes, have expressed confidence in their readiness to face Rohr’s team. Alex Iwobi, a key player for Nigeria, emphasised their determination, stating, “Today is war.”

As the two sides prepare to clash, the match promises to be a defining moment in the World Cup qualifiers. Whether Rohr can lead Benin to an upset victory against his former team remains to be seen.
