Ogenyi Onazi mourns, demands action from Nigerian government over unlicensed drivers
Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi and his family are mourning after a tragic accident involving ten vehicles claimed the life of his brother’s wife. The devastating incident occurred around 4 pm earlier this week, leaving Onazi heartbroken.
Onazi took to Instagram to share the harrowing details. His elder brother was driving with his wife when their car was struck by a truck loaded with fertilizer that had lost control. The truck driver, who lacked a proper license, fled the scene after the collision. Onazi’s sister-in-law was killed instantly, while his brother survived but suffered multiple dislocated joints.
In his emotional message, Onazi expressed his sorrow and confusion over the tragedy, criticizing the lack of driving safety and regulation in Nigeria. “Driving in Nigeria, you will know that a lot of people on the road don’t have proper driving knowledge. Lately, trucks and tank drivers have been killing a lot of people because of reckless driving,” he lamented.
The former Lazio star, who has over 50 caps for Nigeria, called on the federal government and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to address the dire situation on Nigerian roads to prevent further loss of lives. “I am really sad and confused.. Ann Onazi, rest well,” he concluded in his post.
The heartbreaking news has elicited an outpouring of support and condolences from fans and fellow footballers, including Onazi’s former Super Eagles teammates. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangerous conditions on Nigeria’s roads, where inadequate regulation and enforcement continue to put innocent lives at risk.
