Nigerians reject Sunday Oliseh’s ‘I can help Super Eagles’ offer

Former Super Eagles coach and captain, Sunday Oliseh, recently expressed his desire to return to the national team to assist with the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. However, his offer has been met with widespread rejection from Nigerian fans.

Sunday Oliseh, who managed the Super Eagles from 2015 to 2016, believes he can help “rescue” the team’s faltering World Cup qualification campaign. This comes after the disastrous tenure of Finidi George, which left the team in disarray. Oliseh stated:

“If my country wants to speak with me, I will answer. I can also give technical assistance because we need to qualify for the World Cup.”

Despite Oliseh’s confidence and willingness to return, Nigerian fans have made it clear they do not want him back. Many fans criticized Oliseh’s past behavior and questioned his ability to lead the team effectively. One fan commented, “Sunday Olise should take his pomposity elsewhere. Super Eagle doesn’t need him. He is not different from Finidi George.” Another added, “This one that will come & start fighting players. If you know you are so good as you often perceive go and coach another club or national team. Super Eagles is not a must for you to coach. We don’t need you.”

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has not yet confirmed Finidi George’s resignation, despite reports that he has moved on to a new job with Rivers United. The uncertainty has left the national team in a state of chaos.

During his previous stint as the Super Eagles manager, Oliseh lost only two matches out of 14, conceded just six goals, and the team scored 19 goals. Despite this, fans remain unimpressed and believe his return would be detrimental to the team. “Make person tell am make him go rest abeg, him wahala pass Finidi own,” said one fan. Another stated, “His coming back will give us an everlasting setback we don’t need him in our national team again.”

As the search for a new manager continues, it is evident that Nigerian fans are not in favor of Sunday Oliseh’s return. The Super Eagles’ next steps remain uncertain as they prepare for the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers as well as 2025 AFCON qualification campaign.
