Wilfred Ndidi explains his decision to sign new Leicester City contract
Leicester City and Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has signed a new contract with the Foxes, after his previous deal expired at the end of June.
The 27-year-old’s contract extension, which includes an option for an additional 12 months, comes amid interest from several European clubs and a potential move to Saudi Arabia. Instead, Ndidi has committed to Leicester City for another three years.
Ndidi, who joined Leicester from Genk in the 2016-17 season, has been a pivotal player for the team, contributing to their FA Cup and Community Shield victories in 2021 and their recent Championship win. With 273 appearances for Leicester and 58 caps for the Nigerian national team, Ndidi’s decision to stay will allow him to build on his impressive record.
Speaking to the club after agreeing to the new deal, Ndidi cited several reasons for his decision to remain with Leicester. A key factor was a conversation with new manager Steve Cooper. Ndidi appreciated Cooper’s vision for the team and felt a strong connection with his ideas.
“I feel great, I feel excited, I feel at home,” Ndidi said. “That’s the most important thing. I feel really happy to continue with the club. My family is settled here and everyone back home, when they say Ndidi, they say Leicester also!
“It’s really amazing to be a part of this journey going forward. It was quite an easy decision because my family is settled here. My daughter’s going to school, it’s easy and relaxed. I know my family is sorted, and I can just focus on football.”
Ndidi also highlighted his excitement about working with Cooper, describing him as a “great guy” with “good ideas.”
“It’s very exciting [to be back in the Premier League]. We know this is where we belong. We’ll try our best to keep it that way. We want to be here, and we want to stay here,” Ndidi added.
Ndidi could make his 193rd Premier League appearance when Leicester City hosts Tottenham Hotspur at the King Power Stadium on August 19, marking the start of their Premier League season.
