Opinion: Asisat Oshoala should start for Super Falcons against Spain

Nigeria face Spain in their second group match at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Sunday, July 28, 2024. Many Nigerians including this writer hold opinion that Asisat Oshoala should start in attack when the Super Falcons take on the defending World Champions, Spain.

Asisat Oshoala, the reigning African Player of the Year, if included in the starting eleven, will offer a boost to Nigeria’s attacking options.

Oshoala, who missed the opening game against Brazil, is anticipated to pair with Rasheedat Ajibade in a revamped attack that will give the Spanish defense a good test.

Coach Randy Waldrum’s decision to leave Oshoala out of the first match, did not yield the desired result as Nigeria fell 1-0 to Brazil. The Super Falcons struggled to capitalize on their chances, a scenario Oshoala’s inclusion will hopefully rectify.

Spain, fresh off a 2-1 victory over Japan, enters the match as the clear favorites. Their recent success, including winning the World Cup and the UEFA Nations League, highlights their status as a dominant force in women’s football.

To counter Spain’s formidable squad, Waldrum should deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation. The probable lineup includes:

  • Goalkeeper: Chiamaka Nnadozie
  • Defenders: Michelle Alozie, Oluwatosin Demehin, Osinachi Ohale, Chidinma Okeke
  • Midfielders: Deborah Abiodun, Christy Ucheibe
  • Attackers: Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, Esther Okoronkwo

The match between Nigeria and Spain will be a critical test for the Super Falcons, who need a strong performance to advance further in the tournament. The clash is set to be a significant challenge given Spain’s current form and status.

Fans can follow the Super Falcons’ game against Spain, set for Sunday, through various sports channels and online streaming services.
