Sylvanus Okpala calls for homegrown solution for Super Eagles’ coaching woes

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been without a permanent coach since Finidi George’s resignation in June. Sylvanus Okpala, a former assistant coach for the team, has called for a domestic solution to address Nigerian football’s current challenges.

In a recent interview, Okpala criticized the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for seeking foreign coaches, arguing that the country already has capable coaching talent within its borders.

He remarked per PUNCH, “Nigeria are going to Mount Kilimanjaro looking for a coach. They are going to Mount Everest looking for the coach, but the coaches that will solve Nigerian football problems for now are under their feet here in Nigeria.”

Okpala also stressed the importance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, warning of serious consequences for Nigerian football if the team fails to secure a spot. He further addressed the public feud between Victor Osimhen and former coach Finidi George, underscoring the need for a professional relationship between players and coaches.

Additionally, Okpala advised future coaches to focus on building trust and understanding with players through individual meetings.
