Will ‘match-winner’ Fisayo Dele-Bashiru start for Nigeria Super Eagles In Libya

Despite scoring the decisive goal in Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Libya, Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen has not guaranteed Fisayo Dele-Bashiru a starting spot for the second leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Dele-Bashiru, a midfielder for Lazio, emerged as the hero on matchday three, netting the only goal to secure an important win for Nigeria in the first leg. However, Eguavoen has made it clear that the starting lineup for the return fixture is still undecided.

Speaking about the upcoming match, Eguavoen stressed the importance of fitness and squad depth.

“I don’t know if he [Dele-Bashiru] will start the second leg,” Eguavoen said. “First, we need to see how all the players respond to the physio and medical team today.”

The coach further explained that the Super Eagles’ squad is well-balanced, and every player is ready to contribute. “All 23 players in the squad are capable of starting the game,” Eguavoen added, leaving the door open for changes to the starting lineup.

Nigeria will aim to maintain their momentum as they prepare for the second leg, which will take place at the Benina Stadium in Libya on Tuesday.

The win in the first leg has boosted the Super Eagles’ confidence, but Eguavoen has cautioned against complacency. With all 23 players considered fit to start, the team is expected to be competitive regardless of who makes the lineup.

Fans will be eager to see if Dele-Bashiru, who impressed with his match-winning performance, gets another chance to shine or if Eguavoen opts for a different tactical approach.

The Super Eagles currently sit atop Group D in the qualifiers, and a second victory against Libya would strengthen their position ahead of the 2025 AFCON tournament.
