Why Watford star Kwadwo Baah was sent off after controversial celebration
Watford forward Kwadwo Baah made headlines for the wrong reasons during his team’s 2-1 win over Portsmouth on Boxing Day.
Baah, 21, was shown a red card after the match for mocking Portsmouth fans with the “Take the L” dance, popularised by the video game Fortnite.
The Championship clash at Vicarage Road was tense, with Watford coming from behind to secure three points. Baah played a key role in the comeback, earning a controversial penalty after a challenge from Freddie Potts. Initially ruled as a goal kick, the decision was reversed after consultation with the assistant referee, even though replays suggested the foul happened outside the box.
Edo Kayembe converted the penalty to equalise, and Rocco Vata scored the winner in added time with a composed finish past Nicolas Schmid.
After the final whistle, Baah approached the Portsmouth fans and performed the “Take the L” dance, a move that mocks the losing side. This act angered the visiting supporters, some of whom tried to storm the pitch. Stewards quickly intervened to restore order.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho called Baah’s behaviour unacceptable and described it as a “sackable offence.” He also criticised the officiating, saying it failed to meet Championship standards.
Watford manager Tom Cleverley condemned the celebration, stating, “We’ll handle this internally. Winning should come with humility.”
The young forward now faces further disciplinary action. While some see his actions as youthful excitement, others believe it crossed the line into unsportsmanlike behaviour.
