African Star Becomes Brentford’s Premier League Goal King
DR Congo striker Yoane Wissa made history by becoming Brentford’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League with his 37th goal. The milestone came during a thrilling 2-2 draw against Manchester City at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Wissa’s record-breaking goal was pivotal as Brentford fought back from a 2-0 deficit after City’s Phil Foden struck twice in the second half. Wissa halved the deficit by finishing a precise cross from Mikkel Damsgaard, which Mats Roerslev expertly set up.
The 28-year-old forward showed composure to slot the ball past City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, surpassing Ivan Toney’s previous record of 36 Premier League goals for the Bees. Brentford’s comeback was completed ten minutes later when Christian Norgaard equalised, ensuring City dropped points for the 11th time this season.
Brentford remain 10th in the league, maintaining their strong home form. Manager Thomas Frank praised Wissa’s achievement as “remarkable,” highlighting his impact since joining the club for £8.5 million from Lorient in 2021.
“Wissa has been a fantastic player for us, especially in his partnership with Bryan Mbeumo,” Frank said. “His goals and teamwork have been crucial, particularly during challenging periods.”
This historic moment not only cements Wissa’s legacy at Brentford but also showcases the team’s resilience against one of the Premier League’s toughest opponents.
