Coco battles past Mirra Andreeva to reach Rome Semifinals
Coco Gauff fought back to defeat Mirra Andreeva 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 and book her place in the semifinals of the Italian Open.
It was another comeback win for Gauff, who has now come from a set down in each of her last three matches in Rome. The American also improved to 5-0 against Andreeva.
After losing the opening set, Gauff raised her level in the second and took control of the match. She looked on course for a comfortable finish after building a 5-1 lead in the deciding set, but Andreeva refused to go away and pushed the match deep before Gauff finally closed it out.
The win sends Gauff into her fourth Rome semifinal and adds another top-10 victory to her.
After the match, Gauff spoke about staying mentally focused during the tense ending.
“Just trying to stay there mentally again,” she said. “I had a big lead in the third set and it got a little bit close. But she’s a great player. She’s capable of winning games.”
“I learned a little bit on how to try to close those out. I’m glad I was able to win.”
Gauff continues to show why she is regarded as one of the toughest competitors on the WTA Tour, finding ways to win even when matches become difficult.
