Ex-Lakers Player Says LeBron James Will “Go Out With a Bang” If Next Season Is His Last

LeBron James is about to begin his 23rd season in the NBA — an incredible achievement for any athlete. As the 40-year-old prepares for the 2025–26 campaign, former Lakers player Wesley Johnson shared what he thinks fans can expect.

Speaking on the Lakers Nation channel, Johnson said:

“It’s hard to know what he’s planning because he keeps things private. But one thing’s for sure — LeBron will be ready. No matter what team he’s on, or if this is his last season or not, you’ll always get the best version of him when he’s on the court. If it is his final season, it’s going to be a big one — he’ll definitely go out with a bang. It’ll be fun to watch.”

Most players start to slow down much earlier in their careers, but LeBron has stayed strong. While he may not be as fast or explosive as he once was, he makes up for it with skill, experience, and smart decision-making.

There were rumours earlier in the summer that LeBron might leave the Lakers. Some even suggested he could be traded. But those talks have gone quiet. Now, it seems more likely he’ll play out the final year of his contract with the Lakers.

Some teams are said to be watching closely in case he’s released by the Lakers, but for now, staying in Los Angeles seems the most likely outcome. Even NBA star Luka Doncic has shown his support, saying he hopes LeBron finishes his career as a Laker.

Looking ahead, the Lakers have made some strong signings in the off-season and are aiming to compete for the title. If LeBron stays part of the main team, he’ll continue to play an important role — though it’s becoming clearer that Doncic is starting to take centre stage.

Last season, LeBron averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game — numbers that prove he’s still one of the best players, even at 40.

If this does turn out to be his final season, it would be the end of one of the greatest careers in basketball history. But if he chooses to become a free agent in 2026, many top teams will be keen to sign him for one last title push.
