Burna Boy Leaves Out Messi and Ronaldo in His All-Time Greats

Nigerian Grammy Award winner Damini Ogulu, known worldwide as Burna Boy, has sparked debate after leaving out Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo from his list of football’s greatest players.
Speaking on GOAT Talk, a YouTube series by Complex where celebrities discuss their best and worst picks on different topics, Burna Boy was asked to name his three football Greatest of All Time (GOATs).
Without hesitation, he chose Nigeria’s Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Brazil’s Ronaldinho, and Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.
The decision surprised many, as Messi and Ronaldo have ruled world football for almost 20 years, sharing 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them.
Why Okocha, Ronaldinho and Osimhen?
Burna Boy’s first choice, Okocha, is one of Nigeria’s most celebrated players. The former PSG midfielder is remembered as one of Africa’s most skilful footballers.
Ronaldinho, famous for his tricks, creativity and joy on the pitch, remains a global favourite even in retirement.
His third pick, Victor Osimhen, is only 26 but has already become Nigeria’s biggest football star in Europe. He won the African Player of the Year, was nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or, and last season claimed the Turkish Super Lig Golden Boot with Galatasaray after scoring 26 goals.
Osimhen continues to lead Nigeria’s attack and is seen as vital to the Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes.
