AFCON 2025: Sunday Oliseh Defends Critical Analysis After Super Eagles’ Win Over Tanzania

Former Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has strongly replied to criticism over his television analysis of Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Tanzania.

Oliseh came under heavy criticism on social media after Nigeria’s 2–1 victory, with some fans accusing him of being too harsh in his assessment despite the win. Many Nigerians felt his post-match comments focused more on the team’s weaknesses than on the positive result.

The former Nigeria captain trended on X (formerly Twitter) as the backlash grew, with sections of the football community questioning his tone and suggesting he was unsupportive of the players and coaching staff.

In response, Oliseh released an official statement to clear the air, insisting his comments were misunderstood and were meant to help the team improve.

“I am deeply saddened by the suggestions on social media that my analysis of the Super Eagles’ performance against Tanzania comes from a lack of support for the team,” Oliseh said.

“For nearly 40 years, I have dedicated my life to Nigerian football. While my role as an analyst demands honesty and objectivity, my heart remains fully with the players and coach Eric Chelle. Constructive criticism is not hatred; it is meant to help the team grow and succeed.”

Oliseh also pointed out what he described as a contradiction in public reactions to his work as a pundit.

“Not long ago, I was accused of being too supportive of the coaching crew. To now be accused of the opposite shows a misunderstanding of my role. My loyalty to Nigeria is unwavering and needs no defence. Let us move past these distractions and unite behind the team. God bless Nigeria,” he added.

Nigeria will shift focus back to action on the pitch as Eric Chelle’s side prepares for their next match at the tournament.
