AFCON Round of 16: Predictions for Sunday, January 4, 2026
The Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 continues today, Sunday, January 4, 2026, and we have two exciting matches lined up. It is now knockout football, where one mistake can end a team’s journey.
Morocco vs Tanzania (5:00 pm)
The first match of the day will see Morocco take on Tanzania at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, with kick-off set for 5:00 pm.
Morocco have looked solid so far in the tournament. They beat Zambia and Comoros in the group stage and only dropped points against Mali. They are well organised, strong in midfield and dangerous going forward. Playing in front of home supporters also gives them a big advantage.
Tanzania, on the other hand, have shown good fighting spirit. They managed draws against Tunisia and Uganda but struggled against Nigeria. While they work hard and defend well, they often find it difficult to cope with teams that press high and move the ball quickly.
Looking at the head-to-head record, Morocco clearly have the upper hand, with seven wins from eight meetings. Based on form, quality and experience, I believe Morocco will be too strong.
My prediction: Morocco 3-1 Tanzania
South Africa vs Cameroon (8:00 pm)
Later in the evening, South Africa face Cameroon at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off at 8:00 pm.
This is a very interesting match between two teams with different styles. South Africa prefer to keep the ball, pass patiently and control the game through midfield. They have been calm and disciplined so far, with Ronwen Williams providing confidence in goal.
Cameroon are AFCON giants and always dangerous in knockout matches. They are physical, strong at the back and very quick on the counter-attack. Their comeback win over Mozambique showed their fighting spirit and experience.
The head-to-head record suggests a tight contest, with many draws between both sides. South Africa have not lost to Cameroon in several meetings, but Cameroon’s experience in big moments cannot be ignored.
I expect a close and tense game, with chances at both ends. Neither team may be able to settle it in normal time.
My prediction: 2-2 draw, with the winner decided on penalties
