Chelle Defends Decision to Restrict Media Access Ahead of AFCON Round of 16

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended his decision to restrict media access to the team ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 Round of 16 clash against Mozambique.
The decision caused criticism among sections of the Nigerian media after journalists and content creators were denied access to the team’s training sessions on Friday and Saturday. This was a change from the usual practice, where the media are allowed limited access to speak with players and observe training.
Many journalists expressed displeasure, especially after travelling to Morocco to cover the tournament.
Chelle addressed the issue on Sunday during his pre-match press conference, insisting that the move was necessary to keep the players fully focused as the competition enters the knockout stage.
“My job is not to coach the national team for the media,” Chelle said.
“When this tournament started, the rule was one training session for journalists. Out of respect, I spoke with my media officer before AFCON and we agreed to allow Nigerian journalists two sessions per week.
“But now we are not on holiday. I have to protect my players and focus on the work. This is not against the media. I want my team to stay focused.
“We have an objective. If I open the doors to training and we lose, people will say I made a mistake. This decision is to protect my players.
“If you want content at the hotel, I have no problem with that. Everyone should do their job, and in the end, I will be judged by results.”
From his comments, it appears unlikely that Chelle will change his position while Nigeria remain in the competition.
Nigeria will face Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday at the Complexe Sportif de Fes. The Super Eagles are familiar with the venue, having won all three of their Group C matches at the same stadium.
Although Mozambique are considered underdogs, Nigeria will be expected to deliver a strong performance and avoid any upset as they continue their push for the AFCON 2025 title.
