CAF Reviews Nwabali’s Conduct After Nigeria’s AFCON Semi-final Exit

The Confederation of African Football has opened a disciplinary review into the conduct of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali following Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria were knocked out after losing 4–2 on penalties to the host nation in Rabat. The match ended goalless after normal time, but attention has since shifted to events that happened after the final whistle.

CAF officials are reviewing video footage that appears to show Nwabali making gestures towards sections of the Moroccan supporters in the stands. The images have circulated widely on social media and have raised concerns about possible misconduct towards spectators.

If the actions are confirmed, they could be considered a breach of CAF’s disciplinary rules, which strictly forbid offensive or inappropriate behaviour towards fans.

The semi-final was played in a tense atmosphere, with strong home support for Morocco throughout the match. Nwabali was heavily involved during the game and faced constant pressure, especially during the penalty shoot-out.

Some Nigerian supporters have suggested that the goalkeeper may have reacted to provocation from the crowd. However, CAF is known to take a firm position on such matters, regardless of the situation.

CAF is expected to make a decision after completing its review of the footage.

Meanwhile, Nwabali ended the tournament on a positive note by playing a key role in Nigeria’s bronze medal victory over Egypt.

The third-place match finished goalless after 90 minutes, with both teams creating few chances. Nigeria went on to win the penalty shoot-out, with Nwabali making crucial saves to help the Super Eagles secure third place at AFCON 2025.
