National Para Sports Festival Begins in Abuja with Strong Call for Inclusion

The third edition of the National Para Sports Festival has officially started in Abuja, bringing together athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Organisers described the event as a major celebration of resilience, inclusion, and sporting excellence, as para-athletes compete across 15 different sports, including athletics, powerlifting, wheelchair basketball, and swimming.
Officials said the growing number of participants shows increasing recognition of para-athletes as key contributors to Nigeria’s success in international competitions. Many of the athletes at the festival have already represented the country on the global stage.
The competition is also seen as an opportunity to promote inclusion and equal opportunities for persons living with disabilities. Stakeholders stressed the need for better facilities, improved funding, and stronger grassroots programmes to support para-sports development in the country.
Despite Nigeria’s strong record in international para-sport events, experts believe more needs to be done locally to support athletes. They noted that many still face challenges such as poor infrastructure and limited financial backing.
As the festival continues, attention will not only be on medals but also on the determination of athletes who continue to overcome challenges and push for greater recognition in Nigerian sports.
